Vendors or the Auction House (AH)?
Most of the gold you’ll make as a new player will come from either vendors or the AH. How does a player decide which one to pick? The answer is: how fast do you need the gold, how close are you to an Auction House and what’s the item’s value? That’s really all it boils down to.
WOW Auction House vers the WOW Vendors
Only the major cities have an Auction House. Vendors are everywhere. They’re in towns, cities, tiny encampments, outposts and even alone under a tree or behind a rock far from the beaten path. When your bags are full of junk far from a city, these guys come in handy. Your bags have more room for those prized items in your next quest and your wallet fattens up.
A Tip Blizzard Will Not Tell You
One of the tips on the loading page is that a grey item is of little value so sell it to a vendor. That’s not really true. Lots of grey items are components for potions or spells and more. You have to learn which ones they are so you get silver or gold for them in the Auction House, and not just meager coppers from the vendors. Weapons, armor or other non-biological items that are grey should be sold to a vendor. The tricky part in getting gold for grey items is knowing which body parts, plants and scraps have value to other players at the WOW Auction House.
Using The WOW Auction House
Browsing the items at the Auction House in WOW shows what has current value among players. Check for the going rate. Any white, green, blue or purple item will bring you more cash from the Auction House than from a vendor. Unlike an immediate vendor sale, you can spend hours at the Auction House browsing, buying and selling.
Making gold on WOW by selling your items to a vendor or the Auction House is a matter of convenience, time and location. Selling to a vendor is immediate but the Auction House has the best stuff to buy and the better gold for your sales.
The One Thing To Remember
One more thing you can use to make more gold from the drop down items you get is – the WOW mail box! If you are too far from an Auction House and you know you have an item you can sell for much more gold to other players then you get from the vendors in WOW – you need to send it to your other characters or to your Alt.
